Wait, so what is AmeriCorps? 

AmeriCorps, often referred to as “the domestic Peace Corps” is a national service program in which individuals dedicate their time to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. Hands On Atlanta’s AmeriCorps program is a 10-month commitment where members serve in elementary, middle, and high schools. Over the 10-month period (August-May), members serve full-time and receive a semi-monthly living stipend and an education award once their service term is complete.

Job Description

Responsibilities: 

Major areas of responsibility as a Full-Time AmeriCorps Teaching Assistant include: 

  • Assist small groups of students at an elementary or middle school with the goal of growing students’ proficiency in ELA and/or math. 

  • Analyze student progress through maintaining detailed and accurate records of tutoring sessions. Submit timely progress reports of student data. Support teachers and school administrators by assisting students, co-planning lessons, leading learning activities, and participating in school events. 

  • Foster meaningful and productive relationships with students, teachers, school officials, and parents. 

  • Coordinate tasks and manage volunteers during national and local days of service, including MLK Day and Hands On Atlanta Day. 

  • Participate in AmeriCorps trainings and development days. 

  • Be an engaged member of the Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps cohort and a service leader at your host school.

Preferred Experience

Requirements: 

In order to be eligible to serve as a full-time Hands On Atlanta AmeriCorps member, you must meet these eligibility requirements at the start of service. 

  • Commit to completing 1,700 hours of full-time service over 10 months 

  • Have a high school diploma 

  • Some college preferred 

  • Able to clear state and federal background checks 

  • Able to clear a NSOPW check 

  • Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Nationals or Lawful Permanent Residents of the U.S. 

  • Reliable transportation as AmeriCorps members work on-site in schools 

Benefits: 

Full-time members will receive a living stipend of $1,900 per month and an education award of $7,390 after successfully completing the 1,700 hours of service. Members also receive health, dental, and vision insurance at no cost to the member.  AmeriCorps members, if eligible, are encouraged to apply for food benefits (SNAP/EBT) while they are in service. Members may apply for loan forbearance on federal loans that qualify.  

 

All members receive extensive, ongoing training to support their development, including mentorship from Hands On Atlanta staff and corporate and community leaders; community building activities; robust educational and professional development training.

Recruitment Process

The application process is on a rolling basis February-August 2024. This is a highly competitive opportunity and space is limited. We encourage applicants to apply early.

  • Then, you’ll be invited to a virtual networking round

  • AmeriCorps requires a separate online application you’ll complete before your final interview and site placement match interview

  • After a successful match has been made, you’ll be invited to join the 2024-2025 AmeriCorps cohort

This position is an AmeriCorps service position. It is considered "service" and members are considered "service members" rather than "employees." As such, the compensation is a stipend/living allowance rather than salary. Upon termination of service, either at the end of the service term or premature termination, members are not eligible for unemployment benefits.
